How to Find Real Online Deals (and Skip the Fake Ones)

Online stores run sales constantly, and a big red “50% off” label does not always mean a good price. Use these steps to tell a real deal from a marketing trick.

Check the price history

Many products go up and down in price throughout the year. A price-tracking tool or browser extension shows a product’s past prices so you can see whether today’s sale price is actually low. If the “original” price was only charged for a few days, the discount may not be real.

Compare at least three stores

Search the exact model number at several major retailers. Prices for the same item can vary, and some stores offer price matching. Remember to include shipping, taxes and return costs in your comparison.

Set price alerts

If you are not in a hurry, set an alert and wait. Many items drop in price around major sales events such as Black Friday, Cyber Monday, back-to-school season and mid-year sales.

Use cashback and rewards

  • Cashback sites and browser extensions can give you a percentage back on purchases.
  • Credit card shopping portals may offer extra points.
  • Store loyalty programs often include member-only prices or free shipping.

Look for coupon codes

Before you check out, search for a coupon code. Sign up for a store’s email list, as many retailers send a welcome discount. Read our guide to coupon stacking to get even more savings.

Consider open-box and refurbished

Open-box and certified refurbished items can be much cheaper than new and often include a warranty. Check the return policy and warranty length before you buy.

Read the fine print

  • Return window and who pays return shipping
  • Restocking fees
  • Warranty terms
  • Whether the seller is the retailer or a third-party marketplace seller

Do not let urgency rush you

Countdown timers and “only 2 left” messages are designed to make you buy now. If the price is right and you need the item, go for it. If not, it is fine to wait.
