Safe Online Shopping: How to Spot Fake Deals and Scam Sites

Online shopping is convenient, but scammers create fake stores and fake deals to steal money and personal information. These tips will help you shop safely.

Check the website carefully

  • Look at the web address. Scam sites often use misspelled brand names or extra words.
  • Make sure the address starts with https, but remember that https alone does not prove a site is legitimate.
  • Look for a real contact page with a phone number and physical address.
  • Read the return policy. Missing or vague policies are a warning sign.

Be wary of prices that are too low

If a popular product is listed at a fraction of its normal price, be suspicious. Scam stores often advertise huge discounts on in-demand items.

Research the seller

Search the store name with words like “reviews” or “scam.” On marketplaces, check the seller’s rating, how long they have been selling and what other buyers say.

Pay the safe way

  • Use a credit card or a trusted payment service. They usually offer stronger fraud protection than debit cards.
  • Never pay by wire transfer, gift card or cryptocurrency to an unknown seller.
  • Do not save your card details on sites you do not use often.

Protect your accounts

  • Use a strong, unique password for each shopping account.
  • Turn on two-step verification when it is offered.
  • Avoid shopping on public Wi-Fi without a secure connection.

Watch out for phishing

Scammers send emails and texts that look like shipping updates or order problems. Do not click links in unexpected messages. Instead, go directly to the retailer’s website or app to check your order.

If something goes wrong

  • Contact your card issuer right away to dispute the charge.
  • Change any passwords you may have shared.
  • Report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
